Not to sound cynical, but we all know most awards shows are really just popularity contests and the people who get the trophies are largely those who campaigned very hard for them, right?
That said, I still love to watch them. Also, part of me wants to believe that the nominations aren’t entirely rigged, as many high-quality TV series, actors, writers, and directors that I love and have loved over the years have been nominated in various categories.
I’m excited about tonight’s Emmy Awards for a few reasons:
Dan and Eugene Levy are hosting
I get to watch it on a big screen TV with my loved ones (Everything I watch at home is usually on my old 13” MacBook Pro that desperately needs to be replaced…)
If it’s not obvious already, I love TV.
Many Emmy awards were already given out at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards that took place last weekend. Here’s a recap.
I was glad to see Jamie Lee Curtis win the award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Donna Berzatto in season 2, episode 6 of The Bear (“Fishes”). Her performance was so good. I still don’t get why The Bear is in the comedy category - Succession is funnier and it’s considered a drama…
This year, there are many series and mini-series that I have not seen, so it’s hard for me to do a full predictions post. That said…
Here’s what I hope to see tonight:
I know I’ll see some fabulous fashion from the Levys, and that will be great - but I’m more interested in their jokes. Simply hoping for some great comedy from these two lovely men, which I’m sure will happen!
I hope Ripley wins for Limited or Anthology Series. The combination of writer/director Steven Zaillian with actor Andrew Scott was *chef’s kiss*. If you haven’t seen this yet, you should.
Lead Actor, Limited Anthology Series or Movie — this is a tough category for me. I thought Andrew Scott (Ripley) and Matt Bomer (Fellow Travelers) were equally outstanding. If pushed, I would say I hope Matt Bomer wins, because he deserves his flowers, as they say. I feel like he’s pretty underrated. Here’s something else he was in where he gave another phenomenal performance.
Lead Actress, Limited Anthology Series or Movie — another tough category filled with great performances. For me, it’s between Jodie Foster (True Detective: Night Country) and Naomi Watts (Feud: Capote vs. The Swans). Brie Larson was really good in Lessons in Chemistry too, though…
Supporting Actress, Comedy — Liza Colón-Zayas should absolutely win this award for her stunning portrayal of Tina on The Bear.
Reality TV, Competition — I think this one has to go to The Traitors. For more on why I think so, click here. However, it will probably go to RuPaul’s Drag Race, which I’m also not mad about.
Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie - I have to go with Ripley here. At some point, I’ll do a “Spotlight” post on Writer/Director Steven Zaillian, but for now, just take a look at his unbelievable writing and directing credits. Not that he hasn’t had his fair share of awards nominations and wins, but his take on Ripley was so creative.
That’s it from me today — are you planning on watching the Emmys? Who do you want to win? Tell me in the comments:
So happy that Liza won!!
