Ciao, subscribers!
Le mie scuse, as I’m a little late posting because I’m in Italy!
While I travel this beautiful country with my family and gather inspiration for a post about films set in Italy, I’m happy to share a new feature on watch this: feel that — Films to go with your Spotify Daylist.
In this occasional series, I’ll be pairing my subscribers’ Spotify Daylists with films that have a similar feeling or vibe.
What’s a Spotify Daylist, you ask? If you don’t use Spotify you may not be aware of this feature (P.S. this post is not sponsored, but hello, Spotify! My DMs are open).
According to Spotify, a Daylist is a:
new, one-of-a-kind playlist on Spotify that ebbs and flows with unique vibes, bringing together the niche music and microgenres you usually listen to during particular moments in the day or on specific days of the week.
Do you want your daylist (or a favourite playlist) featured in this series?
Simply screenshot the title and at least 3 songs in the list and send it to me by DM on Instagram {at}watchthisfeelthat or message me here:
So, without further ado, inspired by watch this: feel that subscriber Julia, here are some films (and one TV series) to go with her Spotify Daylist: dramatic romantasy monday night.
Save these films for a Monday night — preferably one where you feel like overanalysing a relationship or mourning a fresh breakup. Pour yourself a nice glass of red wine or a calming tea, get cozy, and listen to these three songs from Julia’s Spotify daylist: dramatic romantasy monday night.
First - yes, romantasy is a word. I looked it up. It’s a literary genre that combines romantic fiction with fantasy. That definitely sounds dramatic!
First Track:
This daylist starts with In the Kitchen, a soulful lament about a past relationship by the insanely talented singer and Gen Z diva Renée Rapp.
Listen for these lyrics:
“I still hear all your favourite melodies — strangers to lovers to enemies”
“now it’s just me and 100 square feet of bittersweet memories”
“fallin’ in love, no it ain’t for the weak”
Then, watch this:
500 DAYS OF SUMMER (2009)
Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Tom, an idealistic romantic who falls head over heels for his quirky dream girl Summer (Zooey Deschanel). Tom quickly decides Summer is “the one”, which leads to a series of emotional ups and downs throughout their relationship.
I won’t spoil the film — but I’ll just say that Tom would be more likely to sing along to this song than Summer would.

Next track:
Next up is doomsday by Lizzy McAlpine, a moody, atmospheric song that juxtaposes Lizzy’s sweet, intimate style of pop music with her deep, sometimes dark and dramatic lyrics.
Listen for these lyrics:
“I bleed myself dry for you over and over again”
“I think there’s good in you somewhere”
Then, watch this:
MY SO-CALLED LIFE (1995)
After listening to “doomsday” by Lizzy McAlpine I felt like calling my therapist, but I also felt like re-watching My So-Called Life, a quintessential ‘90s teen angst drama series that is equal parts melodramatic and sweet — and was cancelled too soon.
As you watch, you may empathize with the series lead Angela Chase (Claire Danes) as she obsesses over Jordan Catalano (Jared Leto), and supports her friends Rickie (Wilson Velasquez), Brian (Devon Gummersall), and Rayanne (A.J. Langer).

Last but not least:
Nothing New (feat. Phoebe Bridgers) - Taylor Swift
Listen for these lyrics:
“How can a person know everything at 18, and nothing at 22?”,
“Will you still want me when I’m nothing new?”
Then, watch this:
REALITY BITES (1994)
“I was really going to be somebody by the time I was 23.” This quote, said by Winona Ryder as Lelaina Pierce in Reality Bites, is what I immediately thought of when I listened to “Nothing New” by Taylor Swift, featuring Phoebe Bridgers.
Reality Bites is one of my favourite movies - it depicts the slacker era of the 90s and its over-educated, underemployed twenty-somethings so perfectly — and it’s really funny. Plus, it stars Ethan Hawke as Troy Dyer (swoon). Lelaina’s struggles with love, life, and career would have definitely been inspirations for Taylor Swift songs if the film and Taylor had been of the same time.

Enjoy the movie(s),
