When you're in the mood for a cozy cottagecore morning
Films to go with your Spotify Daylist, #2
You don’t need a cottage to listen to these songs or watch this week’s film and TV recommendations — but if you do, it’ll only add to the vibe.
This week, for your viewing and listening pleasure, here is the 2nd post in watch this: feel that’s series: Films to go with your Spotify Daylist. In this occasional series, I pair my subscribers’ Spotify Daylists with films and TV series that share a similar feeling or have a storyline that fits the song lyrics — or both.
What’s a Spotify Daylist, you ask? If you don’t use Spotify you may not be aware of this feature (P.S. This post is not sponsored, but hello, Spotify! My DMs are open).
According to Spotify, a Daylist is a:
new, one-of-a-kind playlist on Spotify that ebbs and flows with unique vibes, bringing together the niche music and microgenres you usually listen to during particular moments in the day or on specific days of the week.
Do you want your daylist (or favourite playlist) featured in this series? Screenshot the title of the playlist and at least 3 songs in the list and send it to me by DM on Instagram {at}watchthisfeelthat or message me here with the info:
This week, inspired by watch this: feel that subscriber Andrea, I’m pleased to share some films (and one TV series) to go with her Spotify Daylist: cozy cottagecore morning:
Screen these titles next time you want to feel that cozy cottagecore feeling. Press the play arrow on the song graphics below to get a taste of each song.
FIRST TRACK:
This playlist starts with Say My Name — Hozier’s cover of Destiny’s Child’s 1999 hit about a woman who suspects her partner of cheating. To make the song his own, Hozier added his signature soulful style, slowing it down and enhancing it with some lovely background singers. This version made me focus on the lyrics even more.
Say My Name - Hozier
Listen for these lyrics:
“Say my name when no one is around you…”
“Why don’t you just tell the truth?”
Then, watch this:
MAD MEN
When thinking of a film or TV series that would suit this song, one image came to mind: Betty Draper with her shotgun, her bathrobe, and her cigarette. If there ever was a man who needed to be called out on his extra-marital affairs, it was Don Draper. If you still haven’t seen Mad Men, it’s about so much more than the handsome, troubled, womanizing advertising executive played by Jon Hamm. Start streaming it and let me know what you think!
When it comes to this song and Mad Men - more than one female character could have channeled Beyoncé in the singing of this song — Betty is the obvious one, but Joan, Peggy, Mona, and Megan also had many occasions where the sentiment of the song would fit their circumstances. I can’t help but wonder who the Beyoncé would be in this girl group.
How is this song cozy and cottagecore? I’ll leave that up to Spotify to answer, although it’s likely because Hozier’s rich, soulful voice is quite comforting.

NEXT TRACK:
Next up is The Bones by Maren Morris with — guess who — Hozier!
Maren Morris really has the country-pop vibe mastered. This version of her popular hit about a strong relationship that stands up to challenges features harmonies by Hozier. Their voices blend well together, and it’s a feel-good song, which makes it a great one to listen to while sipping your favourite warm beverage at the cottage, on the deck, or on the balcony — whatever version of cottagecore you can muster.
The Bones - Maren Morris with Hozier
Listen for these lyrics:
“The house don’t fall when the bones are good.”
Then, watch this:
HOPE FLOATS
In Hope Floats, Sandra Bullock’s character Birdie Pruitt’s first marriage may have appeared to have good bones — but that was only on the surface. When the truth comes out about her husband’s affair, she moves back to her hometown, and into her childhood home with her mother and her daughter.
Struggling to fit back into a world she left years prior, Birdie reconnects with a former high school classmate, Justin Matisse (Harry Connick Jr.) and a relationship builds slowly. Will Birdie build a good foundation with Justin? Watch and see!
Where to Stream: Disney Plus, Amazon Prime (with Hollywood Suite channel)
Where to Rent: Amazon Prime, Google Play, YouTube, AppleTV

LAST BUT NOT LEAST:
July (feat. Leon Bridges) by Noah Cyrus has the perfect mix of folk and country to give you that cozy, cottagecore feeling. The lyrics aren’t quite as cozy, however, as they refer to the pain of being in a relationship that isn’t healthy but fearing leaving it.
July - Noah Cyrus, featuring Leon Bridges
Listen for these lyrics:
“You remind me every day I’m not enough but I still stay”
Then, watch this:
TAKE THIS WALTZ
If you regularly read this Substack, you already know I’m a Sarah Polley fan, so that’s no surprise. Take This Waltz, Polley’s 2011 film is real, funny, naturalistic, bittersweet, romantic, and sexy. It stars Michelle Williams, who gives a beautifully honest and raw performance of a young woman navigating life and love.
Although Margot’s relationship with her husband Lou (Seth Rogen) isn’t toxic like the one Noah Cyrus sings about, it has become entirely too comfortable for her, which tees her up perfectly for the moment she meets Daniel (Luke Kirby). I’ll stop there because I want you to watch this and let me know what you think. P.S. — Yes, this is the same Luke Kirby who won an Emmy for his portrayal of Lenny Bruce in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
Where to Stream: Netflix, Crave, Amazon Prime (with STARZ channel)
Where to Rent: AppleTV
